10 Tips to Make Your House a Home

Hello Chickadees!

Hi there, chickadee! My name is Holly Liebel and welcome to my blog Nesting404!

I’ve wanted to start a blog for some time now and with the New Year, I decided 2022 was the perfect time to begin.

My goal for this blog is to help women love their home. Whether you are a recent college grad like me, a mom with kids, or a grandmother trying to keep track of everyone, we should love the place we live.

The first step to loving where you live is by taking your house/apartment/dorm and making it a home.

Now you do not need a “home sweet home” sign hanging in your door to make your house a home. It needs to be you! Let your personality shine!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind through the journey of making your house into a home.

1.    Your home should reflect you.

Your house needs to be filled with things you like to make it feel like a home! You can find lots of pictures on Pinterest of what others think the perfect home should look like. But if you don’t agree, then don’t model your home after someone else’s just because it’s trendy.

2.    It’s ok to be a little messy.

Nobody is perfect and neither are your kids or grandkids or husband that destroy your house. It’s ok for your friends and family to see a stack of messy papers or a toy or two left out by your kids. They are your friends and family and won’t judge you…unless they’re your grandmother…my grandmother judges me all the time.

Also, stock photos are staged! It’s ok if your home does not look like it is straight out of a magazine. If your house looks like you bought all new furniture yesterday, your company may look nervous to sit down because no one wants to ruin a new couch. If your home looks lived in, it’s going to put your friends and family more at ease.

3.    Do what works best for you and your family.

There are lots of “top ten” lists and “best tricks” to a better home on the Internet, but if it doesn’t work for you and your family then don’t waist your time doing them. What works for one family may not work for another.

4.    Try something new!

With that last one being said, still be open to new ideas. Don’t be afraid to try something new you see on Pinterest or in a magazine just because you think it may not work. Go ahead and give that bold color pallet you’ve been dying to try a shot!

The worst that can happen is you return some new décor items that didn’t work out and repaint the walls if you made it that far (always use paint swatches in sunlight and shade before painting the whole wall).

5.    Get cozy!

Your home should feel cozy and warm and inviting. You can never have too many pillows and blankets! Try and keep it monochromatic, it will look chic and trendy. You can also try a fur blanket in the winter (I know I love mine on a cold winter day).

6.    Add a few picture frames.

Add photos of your family! Whether the photos be of family members who live far away, and you want to think of them or childhood photos of your kids, it is a constant reminder of who your home is for.

You can find plenty of classy affordable picture frames at Walmart and even Doller Tree.

7.    Make your bed in the morning.

I know it isn’t always the first thing on our mind, but do it a few days in a row and it will become a great habit. When you make your bed in the morning, you’ve accomplished one small task, which can lead to accomplishing other tasks throughout the day.

Also, every time you walk into your room throughout the day or at the end of the day when you go to bed, you will walk into a room with a beautifully made bed. There’s nothing better than climbing into a freshly made bed, the sheets practically hug you!

8.     Turn the light one!

Light will naturally wake you up, but harness that simple thing in your house and use it to your advantage. You can use warm light bulbs to make your home feel cozy.

9.     Picking wall colors.

Play off the lightbulbs and pick a warm tone wall color. The warm tones in the light and walls will make your home feel warm and inviting to you and your guests.

10. L.O.V.E.

The most important thing of all to make a house a home is love. When you have guests or your kids are around, steal a kiss and a quick squeeze from your significant other. It’s a great thing to let whoever is in your home know it is filled with love.
